Technological Innovation in Wetland Mgmt

When: Tuesday 24th June 2008

Where: The Vines Room, National Wine Centre, Adelaide

Context

Wetlands, floodplains and other riverine systems are recognised as a vital part of our environment, yet many are degrading rapidly.

Regulation of water flows along with other obstructions have dramatically altered the natural flow regime of many river and wetland systems and reduced the frequency of inundation of many inland wetlands.

Without a step change in management of wetlands, particularly regarding water use efficiency, many will suffer ecological collapse.

The irrigation industry has developed smart tools and technology that have dramatically improved water use efficiency of crop irrigation . Can these tools be modified for application to management of environmental flows to help maximise the ecological benefits?
